(PRWEB) May 09, 2011

Drugs Make You Un-Smarter author Jill Vanderwood and her sixteen-year-old granddaughter and co-author, Savanna Peterson hit the road this summer to begin a Drug-Free Commitment Tour. The goal of this tour is to teach kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and talk about how substance abuse affects a family. The authors are joined by motivational speaker and free-style basketball great Jerrickson Hosteen, performing as J-Stylez, and Kari Denny-Flynn, AKA Writtyn who is a hip-hop artist, rapping about the problems in her life caused by her past drug abuse and the alcoholism of her family.

The Drug-Free Commitment Tour includes motivational teen speaker, Savanna Peterson. Even though Savanna grew up with a father in prison for drug related crimes, her brother had parties with drugs and alcohol while her mom was at work, and the cops were watching her house, Savanna chose a drug-free life. Her stories encourage other teens to make the commitment to remain drug-free or change the direction they are now headed.

“You’re one of the few people I know where their family did drugs, but you stuck with your commitment and said no to drugs,” says Avery.

“Savanna, you must have a lot of determination to be a leader and role model and not be a follower of others who do drugs,” says Caleb

Jerrickson Hosteen, J-Stylez is a motivational youth speaker and basketball free-styler from the Navajo Nation and lives in Sawmill, Arizona. J-Stylez is compared with the Harlem Globe Trotters. He has auditioned for America’s Got Talent and performed for colleges including Arizona State University, Tsaile Dine College, The University of New Mexico, and all of the Window Rock, Arizona school districts.

“Amazing basketball skills like I’ve never seen before!”

“He had me entertained from beginning to end, Very amazing!”

– Dine College Students (Tsaile, AZ) http://www.youtube.com/JStylezTV

Kari Denny-Flynn, Writtyn is a hip-hop artist from the Navajo Nation who was inspired by artists such as MC Lyte, Litefoot, Missy Elliot, and LL Cool J. Writtyn writes and recites lyrics with an anti-drug message. With roots in both Arizona and Utah, Writtyn has performed at the Boys and Girls Club, The Indian Walk-In Center and for the Salt Lake City School District, the Salt Lake Community College, Mestizo West Side Arts Festival, and opened for The James and Ernie Comedy Show.

“Keep writing how you feel. There are many hurting out there and you can reach them!” — Heleana Maria

“Dig your music and your story. Props to you for overcoming so much and using that pain and putting it to music.” — Delon

http://www.971zht.com/new2/artists/i/323160

Jill Vanderwood first experienced the serious nature of drug and alcohol abuse through her marriage to an alcoholic and the meth addiction of one of her children. Jill speaks about how to recognize signs of addiction, setting goals and making a commitment to remain drug-free.

Jill lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has roots in Portland, Ore. She has spoken at schools in the Granite and West Jordan School Districts. Both authors have been interviewed for the Salt Lake Tribune, The Deseret News, Love To Know Teen issues, and Fox 13, Good Day Utah. http://www.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/1805/2334927?cpt=8&title=broadcast_local&wpid=47

“One stupid drug can screw your life up, that’s why I’m gonna be drug free, so I can have my life be great!” says Michael.

To book the Drug-Free Commitment Tour for a church youth group, YMCA summer camp, drug rehab, Boy Scout or Girl Scout group or camp, Boys or Girls Club, At Risk camp or Wilderness camp, library or year-round school,

Compass Mark is having a conference on Tuesday, October 26th entitled “From Challenges to Choices: Creating Positive Change.” Formerly known as the combined Student Assistance Program Conference and Prevention Forum, the Positive Change Conference will be covering important topics for addictions prevention and treatment professionals, educators, human service workers and anyone interested in positive community development. The conference is scheduled as follows:

Opening keynote speaker: Stephanie Roy and Carl Robertson, “Gambling and Cyber Activity: Pathways to Harmful Behaviors or Innocent Fun?”

Breakout workshops: After registration, participants will receive an email that will allow them to elect one of the following workshops:

“Dying to be Thin”: Melanie Lynch
“Strategies to Prevent Youth Gambling and Cyber Addiction”: Stephanie Roy and Carl Robertson (follow-up to keynote)
“Treating the Resistant Client”: Delbert Boone
“Identifying and Engaging Veterans with Substance Use Disorders”: Keitha Beamer

The conference is free to those who work or live in Lancaster County, and $ 20 for anyone else who would like to attend. Checks for out-of-county registrants can be mailed to:

Compass Mark

ATTN: Phyllis Spencer

630 Janet Ave, Lancaster, PA 17601.

Please include the names of registrants the check is covering.

Other October events for Compass Mark include:

October 11th: “Always Connected: How Digital Technology and Client Multitasking Influence Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment.” According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 8 to 18 yr. olds spend more than 50 hours a week, on average, participating in online activities. Several authors, including Gary Small, M.D., argue that digital technology has altered the neural circuitry in human brains. Shorter attention spans and expectations of instant gratification may result.

October 19th: “Parents Night: Talking to Teens About Alcohol and Drugs.” The event will inform participants about chemical abuse in youth. There will be teaching on stages of addiction, what to look for, how to talk to a teen if you suspect alcohol or other drug use, and where to go for help. This program is free to any Lancaster County parent or youth mentor.

October 22nd: “Education in Lancaster County from K12 to College: A Comprehensive Approach on Diversity, Family Engagement and Student Success.” This forum is an opportunity for students in middle school and high school, parents, teachers, staff, administrators, government officials, community leaders and the general public to engage in workshops and presentations aiming to improve educational conditions in Lancaster County. Sponsored by the Lancaster Latino Education Committee. This event is free, but registration is required by October 8th.

Compass Mark has been focusing on helping young people develop the leadership skills needed to prevent drug abuse, alcohol abuse, substance abuse and other addictions since 1966. They are a central information and referral resource for drug and alcohol rehab centers in Pennsylvania.

San Clemente, CA (PRWEB) January 20, 2012

There’s no instant cure for drug and alcohol addictions.

“The Pathway to addiction is slow, long, painful and winding. The Pathway to recovery is far more challenging but the end result produces pure, unadulterated bliss for recovering addicts and their families,” said 449 Recovery founder Rodney Robinson.

Not to be content with simply being another drug rehab center, the first phase of the 449Recovery program is simple and straight forward; clients simply tell their story and share personal experiences about struggles with addiction at the Orange County California Drug Rehabilitation center.

“After facing the facts about their lives and their issues- clients can then be honest with themselves about the problems that their addiction is causing. At this point, true recovery begins,” said Robinson.

After the phase of admittance, self discovery, and revelation, it’s time to get to work. Direction is provided by counselors to help clients face their fears and find new ways of behaving using behavior modification techniques to change negative behavioral patterns typically found in those with drug and alcohol addiction into positive traits such as self esteem and personal skills enhancement. The program’s high success rate culminates with a focus on setting and reaching goals while reaching out to other addicts that the San Clemente drug rehab center has received praise and accolades for.

Indeed the 449Recovery team is made up almost exclusively of former drug and alcohol abusers who find catharsis through their continual helping and support for others. The founders and executive team of 449Recovery all have a unique story to tell about their struggles with addiction and subsequent triumph over the cycle of addiction. With an estimated 7 million addicts in the US, 449Recovery welcomes the challenge of giving hope to those mired in the cycle of drug and alcohol addiction.

About 449 Recovery

449 Recovery offers intervention services for both adults and teens, detox assistance, group and individual therapy as well an expansive virtual network of resources available to their patients online. All of 449 Recovery’s counselors are recovering addicts themselves, bringing a unique understanding and authenticity to their services. They are headquartered in San Clemente at 1401 N. El Camino Real, Suite 106, San Clemente, CA 92672. For more information, visit their website at http://www.449recovery.org.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 17, 2011

Narconon of Georgia a substance abuse treatment center published its holiday schedule for students and their parents today accompanied with a message about this time of year. Mary Rieser, Executive Director urged that the holiday season, the time between Thanksgivings and New Year’s Day, can be a critical time for addicts and their families making the best place for addicts to be is in alcohol or drug rehab.

Statistics show that there are more DUIs throughout the country during this time of year and surveys indicate that drug abusers often increase their usage during the season. The National Center for Victims of Crime reports that during the Christmas and New Year holiday time, about 40 percent of all traffic fatalities occur in crashes where at least one of the drivers has a BAC (Blood Alcohol Count) level of .08 or more. During the remainder of December, the figure is 28 percent.

Often times, there is a tendency to drink more alcohol while taking drugs such as prescription medications or cocaine. “During the holidays, families are apt to pretend that an addiction problem doesn’t exist, in hopes that the holiday season isn’t spoiled for everyone. There can be a tendency to overlook over- indulgence, which can result in tragic consequences. The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and cheer, but addictions don’t just go away because of the time of year. In fact, abuse can worsen and despite resolutions, the New Year won’t be any different than the last. This is one reason that the holidays are the best time for treatment. Another reason is that families can enjoy their holiday, knowing that their loved one is safe. And if Narconon of Georgia is the place of treatment, anyone can join in our festivities. Families can spend time together,” says Rieser.

Families and friends of those in treatment are invited to the annual Thanksgiving dinner. Narconon of Georgia will provide turkey and stuffing and encourages families to bring their favorite dish. Other events include a holiday decorating party, a tour of local Christmas light shows, a secret Santa party, Christmas dinner and a New Year’s party, celebrating a sober 2012. Families are invited to all events.

A Narconon graduate, who spent the last holiday season with Narconon as a student, described her holiday experience at Narconon. “Last year I spent Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years at Narconon of Georgia. I was new to Narconon and at a fragile point in my sobriety. If I had been at home, there is no doubt in my mind I would have used drugs and created more damage with my family. The holidays were a turning point for me. I had fun with the group and for the first time I learned what it felt like to not feel alone in a group. We all pulled together and supported each other. I made new friends, learned new recipes and I laughed more than I had in all the five years before, put together. I found out what the holidays are supposed to be. This is a time to celebrate life, not destroy it. Most importantly, I didn’t break my mother’s heart again. I had a guilt-free holiday and it was awesome. And I am going to have another one this year,” J.L.

“Though it won’t fit under a Christmas tree, families should consider giving the gift of sobriety this season. It is really the gift of life and the hope for many more happy years to come,” says Rieser.

Anyone struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, or who knows someone struggling with addiction this highly stressful time of year is advised to contact Narconon of Georgia immediately at 877-413-3073.

Clearwater, FL (PRWEB) December 29, 2011

Narconon Eastern US Director, Yvonne Rodgers, appeals to parents to get children, spouses or any other loved one struggling with substance abuse into alcohol or drug rehab now, before New Year’s Eve as the pressure to party, abuse drugs and binge drink reaches its peak for the year.

The holiday time from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day is a critical time for those struggling with drug abuse and is particularly challenging as the pressure to use increases and culminates on New Year’s Eve.

How critical is this? The National Center for Victims of Crime reports that the time between Christmas and New Year’s, about 40 percent of all traffic fatalities occur in crashes where at least one of the drivers has a Blood Alcohol Count (BAC) level of .08 or more. During the remainder of December, the figure is only 28 percent.

“For those abusing alcohol or drugs, we fear that the very next time they use, it will be fatal. Statistically more overdoses and fatalities occur at this time of year due to the social acceptance and peer pressure to over-indulge and really “party harder”. This is why we are appealing to parents of an addicted child, spouse or loved one to immediately admit them into an alcohol or drug rehabilitation program. Programs like the Narconon Program that have a proven success rate that is 4 times higher than the international average, are the ones that address the social dependence factors that have addicts binge, and also the emotional issues that trigger their excessive use during the holidays ,” says Rodgers.

“Getting them admitted to a long-term drug rehabilitation program now will not only have them be safe over New Year’s Eve, it gives them a chance to start saving their own life and ending their addictive behaviors for good. Getting someone to start rehab now is one of the most effective ways to help lower the statistics on DUI’s, automobile fatalities and suicides during this most emotionally volatile season of the year,” says Rodgers.

The Narconon drug rehabilitation program is unique in that it is an entirely drug-free treatment model. For nearly 50 years, the Narconon drug rehabilitation program has been getting people stably off drugs without the use of replacement medications. It uses specifically designed nutritional support to aid in withdraw and detoxification, combined with a sauna detox program and a proven, comprehensive life skills program to handle both physical and mental aspects of addiction. It is classified as a social education model of rehabilitation, where addicts become “students” of the Narconon life skills curriculum, overcome their addictions and learn to live productive drug- free lives.

Scottsdale, Arizona (PRWEB) January 12, 2012

In sync with the Duchess of Cambridge’s (formerly Kate Middleton) announcement that she will become a patron of the British charity Action on Addiction, Journey Healing Centers (http://journeyrecoverycenters.com) raises awareness to make sobriety resolutions and prescription drug abuse education worldwide priorities in 2012. While many think alcohol and illicit drugs are the most prevalent addictions, the biggest causes of death are actually opiate-based pain relievers such as Vicodin (hydrocodone), OxyContin, Percocet (oxycodone), codeine, and morphine. What’s even more alarming for 2012 is that a new super-painpiller, Zohydro, is on the verge of approval and could trigger the worst pill-popping plague since Oxycontin. Journey Healing Centers often works with clients to wean them off prescription drug addictions that they assumed were safely prescribed by a doctor.

While many have the best intentions to get sober in the new year, Journey Healing Centers is urging families to help loved to keep their goals to stop drinking, using illicit drugs, and especially stop abusing prescription drugs. Aubrey Barrow, Journey Healing Centers explains, “Every year our call volume increases about 2 weeks after the New Year with family members asking how to get their loved ones into treatment. It takes about that time for family members and the individual to realize that even though they made the resolution to stop using drugs, they are unable to do so on their own. We always explain to the family how there is usually much more going on with addiction than free will. The more positive support from family members, the better chance of success with sobriety.”

At a time when the CDC (Center for Disease Control) is calling Oxycontin an “epidemic” and the dangerous pain killer Zohydro is on the brink of approval, it’s even more important to assist loved ones in keeping resolutions to stop using pain pills now versus later. For the best results assisting loved ones with sobriety resolutions, Journey Healing Centers recommends three steps:

1. Be a Supportive Sponsor who sets Boundaries – Love is a much better starting point for change versus an ambush of anger with people fighting addictions. Supportive Sponsors can motivate someone to stop drinking or abusing much faster.

2. Take Family Action to Reinforce Resolution – It can take a team to get someone sober and break a bad habit long-term. And all it takes to get started is a caring conversation to reinforce your support. Tell the addict how much you believe in them and their sobriety. Be involved in their treatment, family members deserve to heal too.

3. Find a Lifetime Treatment Program to Avoid Relapses – Prevent dangerous relapses by looking for lifetime treatment programs. Journey Healing Centers offers free Aftercare for life, and families can also attend family programming in Aftercare to support their loved one’s sobriety. This extra professional support is a success key for long-term sobriety, along with other alumni activities.

While families can feel overwhelmed assisting loved ones fight addictions, reducing pain pill addictions must be a top priority for 2012. According to a recent study by the National Center for Health Statistics, enough prescription painkillers were sold in the US in 2010 to keep every citizen medicated around the clock for an entire month. Approximately 41,000 Americans died from what the report refers to as “poisonings” in 2008, compared with 38,000 traffic deaths, representing a 90 percent increase in poisonings and a 15 percent decrease in car accidents since 1999.

Background: Journey Healing Centers operates drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in Arizona and Utah, and has been featured on MTV’s Gone Too Far, PBS, The Denver Post, ABC News 15 Phoenix, Fox 10 Phoenix, ABC 4 Salt Lake City, KSL Salt Lake City, AZ Family Phoenix, NPR.org, USAToday.com, Psychology Today and in People Magazine. Journey Healing Centers has supported thousands dealing with addictions through Residential Programs, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Sober Living Homes, Aftercare, Sobriety for Life Program and a Free 24-Hour Hotline visit: http://journeyrecoverycenters.com

(PRWEB) October 16, 2011

“To help our youth avoid the effects of drug and alcohol addiction I want to share the story of my descent into that world and how I fought and struggled to finally conquer it,” says Andrew Cuomo. A former addict of 15 years, Cuomo has turned his life around and dedicated himself to helping others through drug prevention efforts reaching several southwestern states.

Cuomo had a long history of abusing drugs and alcohol starting with the use of alcohol and marijuana at a young age. His addiction got so severe that he felt he couldn’t relate to others unless he was high. The use eventually escalated to hard drugs and he completely lost sight of his goals in life.

Reaching out for help, Cuomo participated in several drug rehab programs without success. Eventually, he had a caring family member that finally intervened.

“When my father was on his death bed, he asked me to make him one promise before he left this earth – to get clean, be happy, and live well,” says Andrew. “I kept that promise shortly afterward by enrolling in the acclaimed and highly successful rehabilitation program at Narconon Arrowhead in Oklahoma.”

Cuomo completed the drug rehab program and decided to spend his future contributing to educating others on addiction and doing something that would benefit society as a whole.

“Specifically, I saw there was a great need for the younger generation to get real-world, useful information about drugs and addiction, without the scare tactics,” says Cuomo. “It became my mission to reach as many kids as possible, to get them information they would need to make their own educated decisions about drugs and alcohol.”

Since he started, Andrew has educated more than 21,000 kids. In addition, in the last few weeks Cuomo has traveled across four states including Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Kansas educating more than 5000 kids.

“I feel I’m able to make a positive impression on my audience because of my first-hand knowledge from the years that I struggled with addiction,” he says. “As a result I feel the groups I speak to are able relate very closely, as so many in the audience are experiencing what I’ve been through. I have had great success in delivering drug education to tens of thousands of people, both children and adults in the Midwest.”

Cuomo’s efforts are particularly special over the last weeks as the country has just celebrated National Recovery Month and are heading into National Red Ribbon Week; both venues celebrating drug and alcohol addiction, recovery and prevention.

For more information or to schedule a drug prevention lecture or to get addiction treatment through Narconon call 800-468-6933.
