According to Merriam Webster dictionary, the word “stay” means: 1: to delay the penalty (as a prisoner sentenced to death) 2: to give relief or the issue of a time “One Day at a Time” and “I don t have to drink today” are popular sayings in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The big book of AA (PG, 85) said: “We are not cured of alcoholism. What we have, is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual state. ” The two dictionary definitions of suspension may be applied to the alcoholic. When an alcoholic drink is active, it is the same as a condemned prisoner – sentenced to life in prison, institutions or death. When alcohol is finally in recovery and learns that he does not drink today, is given a reprieve. The pain of his body, his self-esteem, and his family is delayed as long as the remaining abstinent alcoholics. The relief is given to recovering alcoholics or the issuance of a temporal effect of his alcoholism. Note that the big book of AA gives emergency suspension daily. For the alcoholic to get a stay of all days, it must first maintain his spiritual condition on a daily basis. This means that the alcoholic must communicate with its superior power, or God, every day and ask for help to stay sober that day. The alcoholic has to allow his actions to be led by God and not indulge his own will. As the suspension add up every day, the recovering alcoholic will notice his mind becomes clearer, his health improves, relationships better and better, and self-esteem increases. The recovering alcoholic will learn to live in conditions of life without alcohol – one day at a time.
